Former BC Government Employee Charged under the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act
A former employee of the Ministry of Transportation was fined $2,500 under the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (“FIPPA”) on one count of willfully making false statements to, or misleading or attempting to mislead the Information and Privacy Commissioner. The count relates to statements the former employee made under oath to investigators from the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner (“OIPC”) in which he denied intentionally deleting emails and records from the BC government system through a process known as “triple deleting records.” This case serves as a reminder to all municipal staff of their obligations under section 74 of FIPPA when interacting with the OIPC and its staff.
